In 2009, a granite sculpture of the Cossack Mamay was erected on the island of Khortytsia, one of the most popular folk images and national symbols of Ukraine.

The Cossack Mamay is an idealized image of a knightly Cossack that appears in folk tales and on the canvases of artists. He became an important symbol of Ukrainian culture, considered a defender against invaders, and his image was endowed with supernatural abilities.

According to legend, the prototype of the Cossack Mamay actually existed. He was born on the island of Khortytsia in 1509. That's why the monument was erected on the occasion of his 500th anniversary.

The sculpture has become a popular place for mass events and gatherings on Khortytsia. The Cossack Mamay with a bandura in his hands is a wonderful landmark for all visitors to the island.
