National Reserve "Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra"

0 18 0

"The National Reserve ""Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra"" is a unique and one of the largest architectural and historical complexes in Eastern Europe, comprising 144 structures, 122 of which are monuments of history and culture. The reserve features numerous landmarks, including the Near and Far Caves, churches, iconostases, architectural ensembles from the 11th–18th centuries, and the Great Lavra Bell Tower, a symbol of Kyiv. In 1990, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The central structure is the Assumption Cathedral, built between 1073 and 1078 at the initiative of Theodosius of Pechersk. After being severely damaged during World War II, the cathedral was restored in 2000. Its interiors today impress with their wealth of frescoes, mosaics, and icons. The Lavra is also a significant center for Orthodoxy, Ukrainian history, and culture, housing thousands of unique artifacts, including ancient manuscripts, icons, and precious metal works. It now functions as a museum complex with exhibition halls and collections that actively promote the preservation of Ukrainian cultural heritage."
