The National Writers’ Union of Ukraine is a historical, artistic, and architectural monument in Kyiv. The building belonged to the family of the Kyiv sugar magnate Symkha Liberman. The mansion, in the Neo-Renaissance style, was built in 1879 by architect Volodymyr Nikolaiev. The decorative design of the house combines features of the Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, and Moorish art. Unique interiors have been preserved inside, including stucco ceilings and cornices, carved doors, tiled stoves, marble windowsills, and inlaid parquet floors. For more than 30 years, the mansion has housed the National Writers' Union of Ukraine. At a turning point in history, this establishment played an important role in the revival of Ukrainian independence, becoming a monument and a cradle of Ukrainian spirituality where a voice of protest against the enslavement of Ukraine was brewing and where the first constituent meetings of the People's Movement of Ukraine were held. The building is currently undergoing repair and reconstruction after suffering significant damage from an enemy attack.
