Poshtova Square is one of the oldest squares in Kyiv. Archaeological research has revealed that trading settlements existed in this area as early as the 4th century. During the times of Kyivan Rus, it is likely that one of the eight marketplaces mentioned in chronicles was situated here. The square has had its current name since the first half of the 18th century. For a period, it was also called Rizdva Square, in honor of the Church of the Nativity of Christ. The square features many historical buildings, including the Kyiv River Port, an iconic structure that was built in 1961. This port has become an important part of Kyiv's infrastructure, connecting the city with other locations along the Dnipro River. Additionally, the Kyiv Funicular, located on the scenic slopes of Volodymyr Hill, offers passengers breathtaking views of the Dnipro River and the left bank. At the square, you can find sculptures representing the legendary founders of Kyiv: the brothers Kyi, Shchek, and Khoryv, along with a little girl sitting on a bronze bench, representing their sister Lybid. The composition was created by the artist-sculptor Volodymyr Zhuravel. A lovely tradition has emerged where the sculptures of the little founders are dressed in themed festive outfits for occasions such as the Day of the National Guard of Ukraine, Kyiv City Day, Christmas, and Easter. This custom adds a special charm and festive atmosphere enjoyed by both residents and tourists alike.
